A lifelong Alaskan, Lance was born in Anchorage in 1970 into a family of dog racing champions. His father, Dick Mackey, was one of the original founders of the Iditarod in 1973, and went on to win the legendary 1978 race by one second. His oldest brother, Rick Makey, won the 1983 Iditarod.
Lance was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2001, and subsequently underwent surgery and radiation treatment. True to his reputation as a no-holds-barred competitor, Lance started the 2002 Iditarod despite still undergoing treatment and having a feeding tube attached to his stomach. Taking 2003 off to refocus on a 100% recovery to full health, he then resumed his rigorous training regimen, determined to achieve victory with the same grit and intensity he used to defeat cancer. He strung together 4 consecutive wins in the Yukon Quest from 2005 to 2008, and 3 consecutive wins in the Iditarod from 2007 to 2009 -- an unprecendented feat.
Lance has personally selected Simard Automotive for his automotive service needs. Lance knows that he can count on every member of the Simard team to get the job done, whatever it takes, just as if they were members of his very own championship team. Stop by Simard Automotive, and let us be YOUR winning team!
